Observational Drawing: Plant Paintings

Students in grade three were instructed in the proper use of a bamboo brush, including how to effectively hold the brush, how to achieve a variety of line thickness and effects, and how to maintain proper body posture to assist in the painting process. While sketchbooks are typically used for drawing, students were led to notice that painting with a bamboo brush actually shares many similarities to drawing and is different than how we typically paint. Students were encouraged to pay strong attention to shape and line quality, but were allowed to render the plants in whatever colors they choose, and whether to focus on outlines, or to fill in lines with color.
